“Everyone should have fair access to the Criminal Justice System.”
BNest Incubator Programme 2017/2018 Participant
The Irish Criminal | Civil Justice and Disability Network (ICJDN) was set up to improve the experience of individuals with an intellectual/learning/ physical disability who engage with the criminal justice system as a either a witness, victim or suspect.
The ICJDN is particularly focused on identifying and promoting ways whereby individuals with disabilities can be accommodated most efficiently and effectively within the criminal justice system – including interaction with the Gardaí, experience of courtroom and prison settings.
An individual’s support needs, once they come in contact with the Criminal Justice System should be assessed using appropriate communication and information so that the appropriate and necessary services can be put in place to accommodate their journey through the system.
Awareness at first point of contact that an individual may have a disability is key.
